There are five electronic differential locks offering per cent lock up of all six wheels, operated by three switches on the dashboard.
Relaying the engine's strong reserves to the ground are massive inch wheels featuring a bead-plate design.
They are shod with Along with a mm increase in the wheelbase through to the middle axle at mm, the front and middle axles have increased in width by mm each at mm, requiring widened and lengthened carbonfibre guards to cover the huge wheels.
Ground clearance is a whopping mm while fording depth is put at mm — some mm and mm more than the standard car. Approach and departure angles have been increased by 16 degrees and 27 degrees at 52 degrees and 54 degrees respectively, while the breakover angle has increased by 1 degree at 22 degrees.
To drive, it's a blast, at least in the wide-open space of a Dubai desert where the G 63 AMG 6x6 has sufficient room to strut its stuff.
That said, the example we drove was terrifically engineered — as complete from a technical standpoint as you'd expect any model from the German car maker whose first 6x6 customer deliveries are planned to get underway in just six months' time.
Before we got behind the wheel, we were taken for a wild ride over the dunes by a Mercedes test driver, who performed a round of donuts to prove how well engineered the G 63 AMG 6x6 really is.
The fact that it was originally conceived for military use helps, of course. The big surprise is just how refined it is. The upright driving position is old school, as is the steeply angled windscreen and shallow dashboard.
But forward vision is brilliant and indicators mounted on the front fenders act as positioning points. Rear vision is hampered by the tall rear seatbacks and a small two-piece sliding rear window.
At mm, there's a mm increase in wheelbase to the first of the rear axles. It provides a longer cabin than the standard G 63 AMG — and with it additional rear legroom.
There's a liberal covering of Alcantara throughout and the standard three-across rear bench seat is replaced by two individual AMG sport seats.
They get electronic backrest adjustment and are divided by a rear centre console. There's an engaging blare through the four sidepipes as you hit the starter button to fire the engine, lending the big Mercedes an eager demeanour.
Blip the throttle and it squats on its springs under load change like a true muscle car. Once underway, the G 63 AMG 6x6 proves remarkably easy to drive.
It may have been conceived for the rough-and-tumble of army duties in the Australian outback , but the work put in to converting it for civilian use has produced a straightforward nature together with level of comfort you'd hardly credit from such an extreme-looking machine.
Those big tyres work with the complex driveline to provide plenty of traction, allowing you to wind it up to regular motorway speeds on narrow sandy tracks without any great trepidation.
Back to top It cruises with great authority, providing longitudinal stability — far better than the regular G 63 AMG owing to the longer wheelbase and added traction provided by the third axle.
There's far less vertical movement through the suspension than the standard car, resulting in a surprisingly smooth ride. There's plenty of lean in corners, but body movements are controlled thanks to a unique spring and damper package developed specifically for the G 63 AMG 6x6.
Despite its weight, it accelerates with great vigour. The 4. The twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned between the cylinder heads "hot inside V" for better response.
Cylinder shut-off under partial load ensures even greater efficiency. With 9 gears and double-declutching function, this transmission allows extremely dynamic acceleration and ultra-short shift times as well as a fuel-saving driving style.
The systematic further development of hardware and software has made it possible to further optimise the reaction times. This means that the driver's shift commands can be carried out faster than ever before.
Gear changes are performed with no interruption in tractive power. The driver can change via kickdown directly from 9th into 6th or from 5th into 2nd gear, for example.
This suspension with selective passive damping system ensures balanced ride comfort by optimising ride characteristics, damping effect and stabilisation according to the road surface conditions.
In the case of small bumps, the frequency selective damping function is reduced and therefore improves road roar and tyre vibration characteristics and sensitivity.
In the case of larger bumps on poor road surfaces, the full effect of the passive damping is available and the vehicle is stabilised more strongly.
Automatically switching off the engine when stationary, for example in tailbacks or at traffic lights, lowers fuel consumption and emissions and saves fuel costs.
This makes for longer engine standstill phases, and therefore even more savings. Other advantages include the low noise level and comfortable starting characteristics.
In off-road terrain the G-Class remains an unrivalled legend. It masters the key off-road disciplines effortlessly and with impressive results, e.
Traction at just one wheel is sufficient to drive the vehicle forward. This is ensured by the interaction between all-wheel drive, differential locks, a ladder-type frame plus engageable low-range gearbox.
The harmonious tuning of the suspension and damping additionally delivers optimum ride comfort in even the most demanding of driving conditions.
With its adjustable, electronically controlled damping system, this steel chassis provides both sporty driving dynamics as well as brand-typical comfort on long journeys.
The AMG-specific kinematics and elastokinematics with newly developed components result in very high stability during dynamic cornering and increase the sense of safety at the critical limits.
The damping system is continuously in operation. This improves handling safety and road roar and tyre vibration characteristics. The damping is controlled individually for each wheel and is dependent on the driving style, the road surface condition and the selected suspension setting.
No EC type approval or certificate of conformity with official figures is yet available. There may be differences between the stated figures and the official figures.
Mercedes-AMG G It combines the engine from the G63, a twin-turbo V-8, with 6x6 portal axles , a pick-up version of the G-Class body, and a luxury interior.
An extra shaft delivers power to the rearmost axle. It has portal axles, similar to those fitted on Unimog vehicles. The G63 AMG 6x6 features a compressor which allows it to reduce or increase tyre pressure in order to adapt the traction to the driving surface, especially in desertlike environments.
Therefore, the compressor fills four containers with 20 litres each to allow fast inflation of the tyres. This makes it possible to change from sandy deserts to regular streets in less than twenty seconds.
The company decided to stop sales of the car and declared the model completely sold out in early to maintain the model's exclusivity. They are only available for the Malaysian market and were bought by Naza World, one of the largest automotive conglomerates company in Malaysia.Autor: Jan Götze. Bei autohaus Neu 30 auf Wunsch.
